Heading out of town we follow the perfume river east to the coast. The beaches as we travel south are beautiful and totally undeveloped. It's a great place to stop and see the local fishermen at work, or go for a swim in summertime.

Leaving the beach the road winds along through a series of small villages, with the lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other. This area is famous for its fish sauce and you will see rows of enormous Nuoc Mam (fish sauce) jars lining the exteriors of most houses.

The highlight of our day is the "City of Tombs". Hidden away at the back of one of the villages are these colourful and opulent graves and family temples, there are hundreds and hundreds of them. With an average cost of around $50,000USD these tombs have to be seen to be believed.

In the afternoon we take a more inland route back to Hue. Along the way you can see what farming life is like in Vietnam. The scenery never becomes boring, from rice paddies, duck farms, buffalo carts to cows roaming freely as we pass from village to village there is so much to look at.

We make a final stop at Thanh Toan Bridge. This covered wooden Japanese style bridge was built over 2 centuries ago and is considered one of the rarest and most valuable bridges in Vietnam.
